I replaced my rear main seal myself and couldn't get anyone to help me put my transmission back; so I paid a shop to install the transmission. Went to pick the car up and the machanic said that he believes the car is leaking from the input shaft, because when he took the car for test ride and went around 60 mph the bellhousing has oil or fuild in it. He states the when the car hit certain speeds; fuild may be leaking from around the seals of the input shaft. What you guys think?
Re: Do ZFs leak from the input shaft (CentralCoaster)
I just replaced the rear main seal and they say it is still leaking; they say the back of the flywheel is not wet; so it must be coming from the front (shaft).
Resubmitting for the daytime crew. As stated, changed the rear main seal because clutch disc, pp, flywheel was oil covered. Had a shop put the trans back in. When they did, they said the bellhousing is still collecting fuild; so they think it must be coming from the input shaft. Does this sound feasible?
There is a paper gasket that hods the input shaft housing to the tranny, but I have never heard of one leaking. As posted above, ask Bill as he deals with these things more than anyone.

Yep, it's possible, unlikely but possible. Another area you can get fluid from is your dual mass flywheel. There is a fluid damper between the masses. There is a procedure in the GM Service manual on how to check the flywheel. If it was your clutch slave I think you would know it pretty quick. It wouldn't be long before you lost the pedal.
I've done the SMF conversion; so the dual mass problem doesn't apply. The slave cylinder reservior is full; so its not that. I questioned the shop and they said its definitely the trans. I've found a replacement trans I'm going to use until I can get mine to ZFDoc.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you paying for the replacement transmission? It's a ZF6 I assume.
If all you have is an input shaft leak I would check with GM first. They sell all the external parts for the ZF6 (nothing inside the case). Everthing from the tailshaft to the input bearing retainer and shims. I bet they have the seal and gasket you need. Pop a few allen headed bolts out and you're in business.
There was one in the for sale forum for $1500. That was a good price and I had the money available so I thought I better grab it while I can. Waiting for it to arrive. Mine has a whine also and it had been leaking fuild for a long time; so I figured that it would be giving me more problems soon. I've had the car for 4 years and I never thought it was too good from the beginning. I tried a couple of times to get serviced under the warranty, but they said it was ok. So, I guess it was.
The transmission I'm getting is out of an '92 which was reportly rebuilt with around 30,000 miles on it. I was wondering if all the ZFs where the same or if enhancements had been made to them over the years.
