Tranny?
I seem to be reading a lot of post of forum members having their tranny's rebuilt and this brought up a few questions.
1- Since 1984 to 1996 what type of tranny's were available and what are the model names of there tranny's.
2 - does the ZR1 corvette have the same type of tranny?
3 - I have an 88, automatic, how many gears does the tranny have? do I already have a oil tranny cooler already installed?
4 - I know I have a shift kit installed in my tranny, shift harder, shift at higher RPM, could someone explain in detail how they make this happen or can someone guide me to a web site. (I know how it works with a torque converter, but I don't exactly know what a shift kit is)
Thanks!

92-93 had the 4L60, double valve mechanically controlled
94-96 had the 4L60E, double valved electronically controlled
ZR-1's had a manual transmission, ZF6 I believe
88's should have a 4 speed tranny. There is a factory tranny cooler installed in the radiator. To know if you have an additional cooler look at the small metal lines going to the passanger side of the radiator. If they go directly in then you don't have an extra cooler, if one of them is branched off and goes inside the radiator shroud then you do. Also look under your nose up into the radiator cavity if you see an extra little cooler infront of the A/C unit, that's probably an additional tranny cooler
A shift kit basically makes the tranny shift quicker, it does not change the shift points, you need a different kit for that. It does this by changeing the passage ways fo the fluid for the shifts inside the tranny. do a search on the web for "transgo shift kit install".

Just once question, will the stock cooler still be cooling down the tranny oil and this cooler is like and add on for extra cooling? or is this part a complete replacement and no more tranny oil will be flowing through the stock radiator?
do you need any extra plumbing to get this setup or does it just bolt on?

My 1990 has a 4L60 :yesnod:
If you have 4L60, somebody put it in there.
It is only a name change really, part of GMs standardization of naming things.
The differences are minor, its almost exactly the same thing as a 700r4 and they are totally interchangeable provided both are for Corvette.

Oh, and the factory service manual refers to the automatic transmission as a 4L60.
Im certain this is an original 4L60
