One of my buddies has an 89 and his trans blew out last year. When he got it replaced, they told him to take it easy for the first 1500 miles (not to drive it hard), to replace the fluids at like first 100 miles, at 500 miles, and at 1500 miles.
I was just wondering if there was any truth to this stuff or if I could just drive it like usual.
Just change the fluid at 500 miles or so. I did and there was metal flake everywhere! I thought the tranny was going to self destruct, but it's been just fine ever since.
Mine came out of the shop a week ago last Friday...he told me to go have at it immediately...I put 4 paases on it at the drag strip last Wed. night and 7 more today at the Challenge...no problemo's... :D
There is no break in period or procedure for a tranny. The reason someone saw particles in the fluid is because thats what tranny's do. Its all clutch material and it wears when used. There are no metal to metal contact surfaces like an engine that need to "seat" on each other. Its all bushings/bearings, lip seals and clutch packs. You can drive as hard as you want the first minute its installed.
I had my 85 rebuilt at a pro shop and they told me to drive it any way I want no problem and bring it back in for a check up at 40,000 miles. :steering:
