Default HOME PORTED HEADS??

My roomate is thinking about buying a polishing kit with all sorts of stuff and getting into porting and polishing. He's very good with cars... i.e. was a mechanic at a racing shop, built a motor, ect..

so we talked about buying a stock set of lt1 heads and he'd port them, and keep workin on them until they flowtested well, and until he learned how to do everything well. Then of course get a vavle job on them.

well anyways, my question is, how would my basically stock '95 A4 run with some lightly ported heads?? I'd also look into 1.6 rr's, probably a ported tb, and maybe even shorties. I want to keep stock idle and don't want to replace the cam yet. I'm basically just curious of how the car will run and the kind of power I can pick up from lightly p&p'ed heads.

Does he have a flowbench or access to one? Porting heads is much more than material removal and hogging the ports out. You can quickly ruin a set of heads if you don't know what you're doing. I wouldn't even think about fully porting a set of heads if I didn't have a flowbench. You can do port matching and clean up the bowls and combustion chambers and a little short turn radius work and pick up a decent amount of flow. That is relatively simple and can be done (conservatively) without a flowbench; any major enlarging of the ports or considerable change to the throat and short turn should only be done by a good porter with access to a flowbench.

Your valvejob will actually determine to a great extent what porting needs to be done and the seat needs to be blended VERY carefully into the bowls. I would suggest some minor port cleanup and matching as well as blending the seats and some slight smoothing of the bowls and short side for your friend to do. Install some 2.00"/1.56" valves and a good multi-angle valvejob (blend the seats AFTER the valvejob); that will pick up LT castings quite a bit. You can probably expect a 25-30 hp increase with this type of work. More if you commit yourself to installing a good bumpstick...
