Hey guys, my waterpump is leaking so I'm gonna swap it out this weekend. From what I can tell, this is a pretty straight forward operation; are there any hidden surprises that I should be aware of or anything I need to pay particular attention to?
The thing I was wondering most about is the pulley; does it usually come right off or do I need a puller?
It's an 89 with the L98 so I don't have an OPTI. She has 163,700 miles.
Nothing particularly tricky, here. Just a lot of crap to remove to get to it. The water pump pulley will fall off when you get it unbolted. You will likely find that the water pump was one of the first things sent down the assembly line, behind the heater core, that the car was built around. Be sure to have plenty of beer on hand. Good luck, and...
You asked for comments and here are a few from my change out a few months ago.
1. I had to remove the air conditioner bracket. This was made easier by removing the plastic wheel well just behind the right front wheel.
2. While you have all that stuff off, consider a throttle coolant bypass. I have a picture of how I did this to my 89 and will send you a picture. Let me know if you want this!
3. Paint the timing indicator with paint. Also take some white paint and fill in the timing mark on the vibration damper with paint. This will make timing easier.
4. Get rid of the frisbee!
