Re: lost wiseco piston install intructions dimple? (ZD1)
I put the end gap in alignment with the wrist pin, not on the piston loading side. The two other oil rings go in at 120 degrees of the dimple. That way you have a gap at each 120 degree spacing. The other two rings go with the mark or bevel up. I put the rings with the gap facing forward and backward. Have fun. :chevy
Re: lost wiseco piston install intructions dimple? (ZD1)
"Stiffener"??? Conventional oil rings consist of an expander and two scrapers or rails. One scraper goes above the expander and one below. Some pistons used in stroker engines, especially with long rods have the piston pin hole bored through the oil ring groove. These pistons usually come with a reinforcement ring that goes under the normal oil ring set up. Your terminology using the word, "stiffener" makes me wonder which set up you're asking about. I have never seen marks on the oil ring scrapers. Often the compression rings have dot or dimple, which means, "this side up". Good luck, and...
Re: lost wiseco piston install intructions dimple? (CFI-EFI)
After measuring and all that, it really seems that the spacer (AKA stiffner for engineers) is fine. There is normally a dimple in the piston to keep it from rotating, but not in mine.
However, my problem is that the oil control rings are being "over pressured" out from the oil ring groove...I would guess about 10 times more pressure than the compression rings. I have this voice in my head that is telling me that I should grind down on the oil tension ring so that I can install the piston assembly in the block...but this ain't right...is it?
I'm using the Wiseco protru piston (4.04", 1.125" Comp hieght) with the included hastings rings.
Re: lost wiseco piston install intructions dimple? (84LT1)
With my SRP pistons for my 396, the stifner ring dimple goes down. But the dimple has to go into the opening of the ring land caused by the wrist pin opening or you won't be able to get the normal oil rings in. I assume the dimple causes the ring not to rotate putting the gap is in the opening of the pin where there is no support for about 1/2".
Re: lost wiseco piston install intructions dimple? (ZD1)
AHA ! It IS a stroker piston with the pin hole intruding on the oil ring groove. Sometimes getting info, here is like pulling teeth. The "dimple" is male? Like a dimple in one's chin, I took it for female. If it is a protrusion, it likely is to prevent the stiffner from rotating it's gap over the void caused by the pin bore. Double check your oil ring installation. The ends of the expander must butt together. They want to overlap. It takes special care, sometimes, to make sure they don't overlap. IF they overlap they will cause the condition you are discribing. Good luck, and...
RACE ON!!!
PA. As a point of clarification, if the dimple IS male, then it lines up over the piston pin bore, facing down, again, to prevent rotation.
