I have posted a post like this before but could not find it, so i am reposting it. I have a set of 882 heads and am not sure what they came off of, or what year they are. First thing is will they work on a 1984 corvette, and secondly if they will work are they better than factory 84 heads or am i better off with the factory heads???
882's are a pretty decent smog head. on http://www.chevyhiperformance.com they seem to flow pretty well but I think those numbers are a little optimistic. either way they would probably show a decent improvement over the stock heads as long as you upgrade the rest of the engine accordingly
The 882 heads are good heads and are beter then the stock 624 heads.
I thought you asked about Vortech heads before, because the 882s are not vortech, the vortechs are 885. The 882s where produced from 74-80 and are 76cc heads the same as your 624s but they flow a lot better.
333882 350-400, 74-80, 76cc, 160/60cc ports
GM 882 iron casting
Port: 151 cc
Chamber: 76cc
Valve sizes: 1.94 / 1.50
I flow at 0.400: 194 cfm
E flow at 0.400: 159 cfm
E/I: 73%
Ok sounds good I guess I will use the 882 heads instead of the factory. But the engine is a 86 suburban engine that i think has 9 to 1 compression with .30 bore and has cast pistons (yuck) all of the parts are basically factory size including the cam. So if i put the heads in the engien with that rebuild with a factory crossfire what do u guys think my HP will be?? I know its a hard guess but I am just looking for an idea. Thanks :steering:
TTT any one have an Idea for tomorrow lol 12/2 or maybe 12/3 before it gets dropped???

Ok i got a problem I talked to a shop today about getting some intake porting done (which was WAY to much money) and he said this type of 882 heads wont work because he thinks they are made for leaded gas and not unleaded gas, and they will burn up!!! They are off a 69-72 car i was told. The shop said that they need some kind of exhaust hardner or something i was lost any one what he means and if i can use them???

Re: 882 heads on a 84??? (vettespd20)
My 1971 Corvette had 882 heads. All 1971 and new heads were built with induction hardened valve seat so they would run on unleaded gas without wear.
Your head shop should be able to tell if the seats are hardened or not. It is not that costly to machine out the seats and press in new hardened valve seats. But now the cost goes up.
In today's world, it is hard to beat aluminum heads. I would save my money and get a used set of aluminum heads and get them pocket ported is a full CNC is too expensive. I may end up costing you $600-800 but to machine the 882 and have them ported, you could end up spending almost the same.
The exhaust seats can easily be replace for about $10 per seat.
That's $80. A good bit cheaper than another set of heads.
While you're there you may want to consider having the intakes and exhaust valves replaced with larger ones and have a new set of valve seals and springs put on the heads.
Then you'll be looking at +/- 350 bux in your heads.
