I'm autocrossing my '89 coupe with an automatic trans. I several events, especially at track site I've been push the rpm's on the L98. Many cars have a form of rev limiter but I'm unsure about my car? I typically run autocross courses in 1st and 2nd gear with a 3.07 rear gear that has worked well for me. I thought there was an automatic shift that would occur based on the dashboard cluster with the up arrow.
Can someone give me a bit of insight into what the behavior is? Would like to know if limiting the rpm's is solely my responsibility or if the car is going to help manage this.
Someone with more knowledge of this will chime in, but I believe the rev limiter is fuel based - it cuts out fuel at a certain RPM. I have the MSD ignition, which rev. limits through the ignition (at about 5500 if I remember when I hit it.) HTH, :seeya
The engine will cut out at the programmed rev limiter. I believe the ECM will cut fuel until the rev's come back down.
The 89 has a 700 trans? I don't believe it is controlled by the ECM. i.e. Shifts on hydralic pressure. Unless I'm mistaken, the arrow doesn't do much on an automatic.
You know the L98 doesn't make much power at the top, right. i.e. If you are bouncing off the rev limiter, you'll do better by up shifting. (Less you have a modified intake tract.)
