Because I have a set of front FX3 shocks ,I was considering putting these in the front of my Z51 equiped car for racing. You can manually adjust the valve at the track without the actuator to get the softer setting for more front end lift aka the 90/10 shocks that the drag racers use.I realize that the setting are nowhere like this ,but out of the car the shocks are much softer on rebound in the "soft" setting than they are in either of the other settings.
As this is a no cost mod for me ,do you think it will acheive any benefits?
Your opinions please.
Front what I have heard, without the actuators, the shocks tend to loosen on their own as you drive. So, for drag racing, if you are loosening them all the way, then I'd imagine it'd be alright. But outside a straight line you'd be asking for a crash.
Racing was all I was going to use them for although I can alwas fit the actuator to lock them in any position. What I want to know is if the soft setting is soft enough to effect any weight transfer gains.
The FX3 shock in the "Tour" setting is supposed to be about as soft as the standard FE1 base shock. If you're going to build a drag race only car, I would think a specific drag shock will give you the best action for weight transfer. But drag shocks for street use aren't a good idea.
One other thing you can try is unbolting the front sway bar at the control arm to see if that helps for weight transfer. A nice thing about the C4 front suspension is that it is fairly easy to swap front shocks. If you drive the car to the track, you might consider getting some drag shocks and just swap them in at the track and then install a street shock for the ride home.
I ran the FX3's for a long time on my car at the strip; the 9 second ET was on them. On the Touring setting they're pretty soft but not soft enough for great weight transfer. I bought an FX3 shock controller from Lingenfelter and a couple of "drag race" chips for it that supposedly softened them even more... Honestly I didn't notice much difference and there was a negligible change in short times. I pulled it off and sold it to a guy on the VetteNet; the car's got Competition Engineering drag shocks on it now. They're soft as hell but with the sway bars attached on the street the car is still pretty stiff.

Come on give us a break The car will not be so horendusly uncontrolable that your going to crash. The car wont handle as well but your not going to kill yourself going to the grocery store. On the track the car will oversteer more all you do is brake a few feet earlyer. Jeeze I'm tired of people coming on here with the doom and gloom attitude, that, your going to crash if you change anything or try something new. I have the FX3 shocks and the front sway bar disconnected I Always drive and drag race on the tour setting It really weight transfers well. I think Mr. Burnett has the correct Idea. It's cheaper to buy the CE shocks than to buy some FX3's( My car came with the option) And For you doom and Gloom types I am currently gathering the parts to change the dana 44 to a straight axle with coilovers.
Thanks for the replies. I was only contemplating the X3 shocks because I have a spare set.

I don't know how something electronic can make the shocks softer as all you have is a motor controlling a valve.

In addition you need to have your shocks revalved for the setting you want
