Re: HELP STARTER PROBLEMS (1990CORVETTE)
  Sounds like the Bendix drive crashing into the flywheel, rather than slipping into the flywheel gears. A bad slenoid generally manifests itself by simply clicking when you turn the key. A bad starter moter will generally not turn over and therefore produce no sound
A new starter should include a new solenoid, motor and bendix.
You can get rebuild kits for starters if you want to go that way. I am not sure about Vette starters
The Hi torgue starters work well and are available from summit and many others

Re: HELP STARTER PROBLEMS (1990CORVETTE)
so it is not the solenoid
Doubtfull!
The solenoid is like a switch that applies the voltage/amperage to the starter moter. When you turn the key, you send a low amp current to the solenoid. That opens it and allows the full battery amps to go to the starter moter! If all 700 cold cranking Amps flowed through the ignition switch, you would fill the car with smoke from the burning wires the first time you tried to start it
A bad solenoid generally will just click repeatedly and not allow full amps to the starter.
The noise you describe seems to indicate the solenoid is opening and sending full amps to the starter moter, but when the moter spins, the centrifigal bendix drive is not properly engaging with the flywheel!
Sounds like your bendix gear is not properly engaging the flywheel or flexplate (not sure if you have an auto or 6sp). You might want to check the 2 bolts that hold the starter in place for proper torque. It could also be that the starter was replaced sometime in the past and should have been shimmed, but was not. Sometimes when replacing a starter with an aftermarket starter, shims are necessary to make the bendix gear correctly align with the teeth of the flywheel/flexplate.
