I assume this might be a power steering problem, but I'm going to ask because I really don't know whats wrong...
The past couple weeks, whenever I'm backing out of parking spots, ect.. (i.e. have the wheel turned all the way usually in reverse and backing up) i get a squeeling sound, almost sounds like brakes. Also, when I'm either stopped or slowly rolling, whenever I barely move the steering wheel slightly to the left there is a tiny little click sound. Well, on Thanksgiving I checked the power steering fluid and it was low, so the next day I bought some more and filled it up to the appropiate level.
Well maybe it was all in my head, but I thought it helped a little, but no it didn't solve the problem. I still get the squeeling sound when i'm reversing out of spots and I still get that little click sound by slightly moving teh wheel to the left..
Anyone have any ideas or input that could help me out? Thanks.
the squeeling may be the pump...or belt. i am concerned with the click you are talking about....i have the same thing, and it just started. i would describe my click as more of like a "dead spot" in the steering. it feels like there is a lil depression somewhere in the steering linkages...just barely to the left or right of center. i just checked my fluid not too long ago and it looked good...so i'd be interested to see what the forum's experiences have been.
Re: POWER STEERING PROBLEM? HELP (Orlando85UCFvette)
Yeah I wish someone could tell me what is going on!
my click ONLY happens when the steering wheel is pretty straight(usually dead stop or cruising no more than 20 mph or so), and I slightly turn the wheel to the left. when turned towards the right it makes no click.
I just hope none of this gets TOO expensive :skep:
Don't forget to bleed the system. The service manual calls for bleeding anytime you top off or replace the fluid or any component of teh steering.
The procedure is as follows:
1. raise the front wheels.
2.turn to the left all the way(engine off).
3. have an assistant watch the resevoir(cap off obviously)
4.turn the steering wheel lock to lock 20 times, 40 if you have a power steering cooler(which you should).
5. while turning, the assistant is watching the fluid level, there should not be any bubbles. Supposedly if you see bubbles, there is a leak in the system.
6.I forgot to add that at all times the fluid should be maintained at the cold full level during the procedure.
I just started experiencing what feels like a notch in the steering yesterday. It's just right of center and feels like a small dead spot and then a noticible catch in the movement of the steering wheel. There isn't any sound associated with it. I too checked the fluid and the linkage and was unable to find anything that looked out of place.
BTW, I'm new to Corvette Forum and Corvette ownership. My 'Vette is a 95 with a Greenwood body kit and spoiler and OZ rims. Since it has over 105K miles on it I'm sure I'll be hunting the forum for great tech tips.
AimHi: I noticed you are also ni the land of unending vette driving weather...i wonder if our problems are realted to the "cold" snap we have been having. Once i get up to operating temp, this tick, dead spot, whatever goes away. my biggest concern is if this is a warning sign of worse things to come...like the wheels not turning at all... :leaving: i believe i read a post here a while ago about steering locking up...but i don't remember what generation it plagued or anything else...dang...i'm too young to be gettin old :banghead:
Orlando85UCFvette you may be right about the cold weather. It's been in the low 40's-high 30's at night for a few days now...thinking about buying a coat.
Seriously though I drove my 'vette today (mid 70's) and I didn't notice the symptoms I described before. I guess I have to classify it as intermittent now.
