Default o2 sensor on 1986, help

1. Can an o2 sensor be changed from above, without jacking the car up? I can reach it from above and can even get a wrench on it.

2. Can the o2 sensor be cleaned and put back in or should it be replaced? Had it replaced 11 months ago, but I am getting a code 32 and when I am driving at highway speeds and press the gas pedal a little the engine acts as though it is loading up. Help Please from those who know. Thanks

If you can get a wrench on it then maybe you can. I'd soak it with a penitrant first before trying it tho. If it won't come loose you could let it heat up a little by starting the engine. Good luck.

Whoa...don't touch that O2 sensor; code 32 is an EGR code!

If that code is thrown on the highway, either the EGR valve is not opening on demand or the temp. sensor is nor registering; if the code is thrown at start up the EGR valve is stuck open or the sensor or wiring is shorted.

Use the diagnostic method on my site (link in sig. below) to analyze the problem.

ittlfly, I was burned by code 32 for big $$ just after I took delivery of my '88 (when books & tools were 3,500miles away), so am not likely to miss that one.

My local mechanic told me that the code 32 inferred that the fuel mixture was to rich and that is why the o2 sensor either needed to be replaced or cleaned from being fouled. Does this sound correct? If I can remove it and clean the sensor, it would save some money. But if people on this forum feel it should be replaced instead, I will do that, but it was just replaced less than one year ago. Will check the EGR also. thanks

Code 32 is an EGR code...period. This code is only thrown due to a malfunction in the EGR subsystem, or possibly an ECM problem.

To check your O2 sensor (along with the coolant temp sensor) use the ECM's diagnostic mode, as described on my site. This test (only needs a paper clip) will determine if the ECM is going and staying in closed loop, in which case both sensors are ok.

If the ECM stays in closed loop then look close at the EGR. The valve and its solenoid can be checked on the car for proper operation.

Check for a vacuum line off also. I had a code 32 and found that I accidently knocked off a line.

I kept getting the code 32, replaced EGR temp sensor twice and didn't fix. Took the EGR valve off and it was totally plugged would not open with a 3 lb hammer!!!
