Bought an AKM cable, downloaded Winaldl, Moates software; Datamaster. I cant get a link to my ALDL . Tried 3 USB to rs232 adapters. My Dell 5100 says the hardware is working but the signal wont hook up. Tried a junky computor , bingo it works. Got 1 block and battery died in the computor . Any ideas?? I would hate to spend $$$ on an old computor when I have a new one. The one I borrowed is really crappy.
Get a BAFO USB to Serial Adaptor. Lost the site that sold them, but its the only converter that I got to work with WinALDL. In fact it works with every serial device I have tried it on.
Bought 2 other ones before I found this one that actually works as advertised.
Thanks ,
I hope its not just my computor. So far Ive tried Belkin Andrew @ AKM was sure it would work , Iogear , and a third one that Circuit City took back. Ihave a pile of parts to install on the car and Id like to scan some numbers before and after.
You didn't say what Operating System that the Dell is using. I found that just about anything after WIN 98 has problems. Try booting the computer in the "Safe" mode (hold down the "Ctrl" key when booting) and then try connecting. That worked for me.
I had that BAFO USB-to-serial adaptor working perfectly on Windows XP, as well as Windows 2000. The Belkin unit was junk, designed to work with a few select PDAs and that was it. Couldn't even get it to work with a standard serial modem, let alone the ALDL cable or my microcontroller programmer (the reason I started my search for a good USB-to-Serial device in the first place).
Much thanks for the above posts. You are giving me hope at least. Dell uses XP O.S. I think f8 is the safe start (never needed to try ) I will try tonight if time allows. Its frustrating when you pay this much for a toy and it wont work.
