I have a 89 w/ six sp. I am considering having a motor built. I would like to kick the HP up from 250 to around 350. Can I do this and still maintain all the sensors, computer, Calif smog, etc.? If not, it will be bone stock. The car is fun now but could be funner! :steering:
Yes you can. You can get there quite easily without touching the bottom of the motor.
Heads, cam, intake and headers is all it takes. Infact you'd probably end up with more than 350hp if you change your heads. to save a few bucks just do some porting/polishing on the heads.
Chucks88 is right, but if you have to build anyway, because it needs it, consider more cubic inches. The bigger the engine, the more mild it can be for a given amount of performance. Also, the larger engine will respond to modifications with greater returns. Good luck, and...
:iagree: go as many cubic inches as you can afford and you will not be disapointed on a very cosevative scale every 1 cubic inch is 1 hp so a 383 has a 33 hp head start a 396 has a 46 hp head start and then you go from there if you put in a stroker of 383 or larger with heads and cam with the appropiate intake setup you will be very happy
CORKVETTE1 - did you make your 406 out of a stock 350 small block or did you buy an aftermarket block?
Just for the record, a 350 ia a 4.00" bore times a 3.48" stroke. The 406 is a .030" overbored 400. The bore and stroke of a 400 is 4.125" X 3.75". Generally the max overbore on either block is .060". I would have to have aome assurances that the block could handle such a bore brfore I spent any money on the job. A 383 is a fairly simple upgrade of a 350. Basicly it is a 400 crank in a 350 block. If this intregues you do a search. There are TONS of discusions on 383s on the forum. Good luck, and...
