Does regulator make a difference I have a automotive adjustable reg I bumt fuel pressure up cant tell if it made a difference I have several mods so it is hard to tell just by driving the car I started to have a problem after I put it on if the car sits over night it starts as soon as you hit the key but if it runs for awhile and you let sit for about 15 to 20 minutes you have to turn the key 2 or 3 times to get it to start and I smell gas I have lowerd the fuel pressure and still have problem Im thinking of going back to stock reg what do you think?

What's your fuel pressure? If you don't know you SHOULD get a fuel pressure gauge and test it.

You can't adjust it without knowing what you are changing it from and to.
There's no need to do it unless you know what you're doing.
It's sort of like driving with a blindfold on.

You will also need to get some scanning equipment to check your BLM's and INT values. These are affected by fuel mixture that is affected by fuel pressure.

Your cranking problem sounds like a leaky injector. Again, a fuel pressure gauge is the tool to use to find the problem.

Good luck with it.

Indeed you need a fuel pressure gauge to adjust your AFPR.

You can also use that FP gauge to test for leaking fuel injectors, which is likely the cause of hard starting when warm.

I don't want to sound stupid here, but once you install the fuel pressure gauge do you leave it on the car or do you use it has a diagnostic tool?

Most of the FP gauges are not safe to leave on the engine for any length of time, so are used for diagnostics & tuning.

I have a fuel gage I adjust the fuel pressure whith the gage on I had it set a about 42psi I was driving and adjusting to see what felt best I have lowerd to about 36 psi I think that is about stock that is with vaccum on it is not a injecter it is definetly the reg but I dont know why It starts better at a lower pressure its like it fluds from the pressure build up after it sets a while after driving but let it set for a long time like over night it starts first turv of the key I think the gas smell is from turning the key 2 or 3 times.

I'll say like the other guys, this really sound like a leaky injector.

L98 engines are known to have hard start problem when the engine is Hot, my car does this also, but it never smells like gas.

I have a little trick for the hard start, I turn the key and if it wont start, I let it go, then give it another little shot, let it go, then give it a little again and broom! it starts without any problems. I know I have a hard start problem, and like most L98 owners out there I'm not the only one.
Maybe your having a bit of both problems. Leaky injector with a hard start problem ??

pull the vacuum line on the regulator, turn the key on but dont start the car, make sure the regulator diaphragm isn't leaking. if it is, it'll squirt fuel out where the vacuum line goes on the regulator.
