Default 700R4 Shift Point Changes

Yes, I already know there are kits available but lets try to go one better. Has anybody purchased any weights from a vendor which cause the transmission to shift at a given wot rpm? It's a real pain to raise the car, pull the exhaust to reach, pull, and replace the governor. Experimenting is a real time waister.

I had the tranny shop reaise my shift points when the A4 was being rebuilt; though I now have a B&M governor recal kit I haven't yet crawled under to use it.

Vic'89 has used this kit with good success though he had to take a few trys to get his shift points set using a combination of springs & weights.

I don't know of a set of weights that will give known shift points without experimentation.

BTW, Vic says it's not necessary to drop the exhaust to access the governor.

I too am about to experiment with my shift points. I checked around and found that there is no given set of wieghts for a specific shift point. Every tranny shop said you have to play around with it. Good Luck.

First of all, there is NO way to give you a certain weight to use and that weight will give you a certain shift point.

You need to experiment a few times.

But it is an easy task. I would first weight your STOCK governor weights, then it is as simple as this:
Lighter weight = Later shifts
Heavy weight = Earlier shifts

You need the B&M governor kit to do this job.

Vic

Does the governor change the feel of part throttle shifts? or is it only WOT it allows it to shift later?

I need to do this as mine in "D" punched only shifts at 4400. Thats the one thing Gran Trans has not gotten down yet.

Jay, sorry to hear that, I guess he was pretty lucky when he upped my shift points. He got em pretty close though I'd prefer to have the 1-2 hold on a while longer.

BTW, how's the 2-3 shift? If they are not nearly the same, you may also need to change the springs along with the weights.

I know my shift points are higher then stock, the tranny was rebuilt two years ago and a shift kit was installed.

What is the stock shift point of an L98 with stock 700R4 automatic tranny?

Jim

2-3 is the exact same way...4400 wot. That is why I have to manually shift the car when going down the 1/4. Around town it's fine. Sooner or later I'll have to purchase that kit from B&M and install that in my 700.

TheStef, I'm not sure what is stock shift point but I believe mine were around 4,800rpm in stock form.

Jay, I'm surprised that Grant couldn't get them higher though I believe that if he simple trimmed the weights the 1-2 & 2-3 shift points would have spread a little too.

I believe that is why mine are now 1-2 @5,400rpm & 2-3 @5,800rpm, though they are pretty close to ideal for my setup.

2-3 is the exact same way...4400 wot.
Jay - If both shifts are at 4400 rpms, then the job is much easier. The change in governor weight will affect BOTH shifts about equal. The hard part is when you want 1-2 at a certain rpm and 2-3 at a considerable different rpm.

My stock shift points were about 4700/4800 rpms.

Thanks for the reply Vic. Remember when I did 12.1 only 110 mph? That was why, it short shifted bigtime. Charged off the line(slicks) then died 'cause it shifted too early. I compared that audio track to my recent ones. Night n Day.

does the governor kit have any effect on part throttle driving? or only WOT?

Thanks.
