Ran over my transmitter, called dealer he wants $165 + $ for porgraming it.
can I put an after market set up in it or should I keep it GM. Also is there any way to program the transmitter with out the car being there. There is a # inside the transmitter is that what they use to program it.
I bought a transmitter for my coupe at the local Chevy dealer, I think it was like $115.00. Initially I thought they had to program it also, but it has intructions on the packaging on how to program it yourself. Hank
GMPartsDirect has these for about $85 plus shipping. The instructions for "programming" are in your owner's manual (really very simple). Also, these are often available on Ebay (I just bought one for about $75).

:lolg: How the hell could that happen?
:lolg: Why would you have the remote separate from your keys?
The stock system is far better then any alarm worth 165 bucks.

:iagree: That sounds like a good deal to me.... and you can program it yourself!

Whatever you do, don't pay the local dealer's marked-up price. GMParts direct and/or Chris at Superior Chevy will put a new in your hands for ~$100. I've seen remotes sell on ebay from $45-$90. As others have stated, aftermarket remotes won't give you the same functionality.
I got a brand new one from eBay for $60. Programming it is easy. The transmitter includes the directions. Don't pay your dealer to do it. There may even be a tech tip on this too.
Re: RAN OVER KEYLESS TRANSMITTER ! HAVE? (John Row)
On a related subject, one of the reasons I bought a replacement fob (from Ebay) was that the batteries that are made these days for the transmitter (CR2450) are too "thick" to fit in the transmitter correctly. Consequently, it is real easy to break the small plastic "clips" that hold the battery. The original battery that came in these fobs (Sanyo CR2450) had a recess or lip around the perimeter and the fob design was apparently based on that lip being on the battery. I have had a hard time finding batteries with this lip in the usual places (Radio Shack, drug stores, etc.) but I did manage to find 2 of the correct batteries in a watch repair shop and snatched them up.
So be cautious when buying from Ebay or another private party to make sure that nothing was broken by forcing in a replacement battery without the lip. Does anyone else know who supplies the proper batteries?

:iagree: I put one if the thicker batteries in my fob and it held up OK until the day I dropped it. The extra shock was enough to cause the clip (which was strained from the thicker battery) to break off.

Well I set it on the back of the car while I loaded firewood into the back of the car. I know who huals firewood in a vette. It was separate becouse the clip was broke every time I walked to the car it would unlock and then lock when I walked away so I just set it there, and for got when I backed up it fell off and I ran it over. Yes I will keep the stock system.
Thanks for all the replys.

In the future, if you hold the door button down for about 5 seconds it will cause the lock to cycle twice. That will signify that the security (and auto lock) is turned off. Repeat to turn on security.
