I recently replaced the clutch master and slave. That solved the problem of the car starting to back up when started with clutch fully engaged. It did not get rid of the problem I experience with my shifter. When fully cold yesterday I tried to shift out of reverse without having the engine on. The reverse lockout ring felt a little sticky and the gear shift could not be moved. I played with it for a little while and finally got it to come out of reverse. I could shift into all forward gears and it went easily back into and out of reverse. I then started the car and still everything was fine. No problems the rest of the day
Does this sound like the reverse lock out mechanism or something more trouble? The problem is I can't recreate the problem at will so if I take it to a shop the problem may not surface.
Scorp: Tranny and OD + filter were drained and refilled with AMSOIL (Gear lube in tranny and ATF in OD) at 24k miles in April '01. I took the car to a local dealer for the shifting issue at 39.6k miles in April of this year. The mechanic reported finding a broken clip and replaced it and adjusted the shifter. The tranny was then drained and refilled with 75W-90 GL5 and the OD + filter was drained and refilled with AMSOIL ATF again. The shifter did feel a little bit "tighter" but obviously didn't fix the problem. The sticky shifter problem was around before the tranny was refilled with 75w-90 GL5.
This might be a dumb idea, but if the car doesn't have that many miles on it, and it has always been like that, you might think about wearing it in. I would just work it back and forth alot. Maybe its just really tight in the tolerances department. The only reason I say this is because my throttle was kinda sticky and working it alot open and closed seems to have fixed the issue. It may come back to bite me in the arce later, but i'll just deal with it again then. :D
EDIT: i guess i didnt open my eyes enough, but i see now that it hasnt always been like that. but my dumb suggestion still stands, maybe some gunk got caught up in there. In fact, you might consider pulling the carpet/pannels off and looking at the linkage for anything preventing it from working just right, and maybe spray some WD-40 down there too. (or whatever greese you like)

It's not a tolerance issue, IMO. When it won't come out of reverse it is tight...very tight. Barely budges and feels like it's pinned in place. I have to pull very very hard to get it out. So hard I feel like I'm gonna break something...like the plastic clip that was found broken in there. I would have thought the gear oil in the tranny would lube it well enough??
If by "reverse lockout mechanism" you mean the thing that prevents you from shifting without the brake pedal pushed whynot just disable it for a while and see if that fixes it. Its not hard to disconnect.
I am talking about the ring around the shifter I have to lift up in order to shift the car out of or into reverse. When the shifter sticks this ring is kind of sticky as well. When I finally get it out of reverse and drive for a while the car shifts into and out of reverse with no problem and no binding. Then, after it sits for 20 minutes or more, it can be very difficult to shift back out of reverse. It tasks me...
I had the EXACT same problem. It also started not going into 2nd gear, especially on downshifts, it would just bounce off. It turned out to be shift linkage, and I got a short shift linkage from Ecklers for like $20. NO PROBLEMS NOW!
I'm not sure how they installed, i'm fourtunate to have a family friend that does contract teaching for GM, and he found the problem and fixed it. I believe you have to actually do it from underneith, but i'm not sure. Some one will know the answer, and i'll try to find out for you.
The short throw kit installs from the top. It includes new "arms" that go in the stock shifter. To install you will need to disassemble the console, remove the driver seat and remove the side carpet/console piece. The linkage will need to be disconnected from the shifter and the shifter will need to come out. I really dont see how this kit fixed any problems but maybe re-adjusting the linkage afterwards is what did the trick. The linkage adjusts from under the car.
They install from the bottom, very simple. You might have to adjust the linkage after install, according to instructions. If all goes well, your shifter throws will be about half what they are now, about a 100% improvement.

"The short throw kit installs from the top."
  So which is it? They install from the top or bottom? We're talking about the two brackets that go for $20 at Ecklers, not a new short throw shifter.
They install from the bottom on my '86. If you want, or need to adjust the linkage, you need to pull the drivers' seat, console top, side panel. You do not remove the shifter. See my above statements.
