I've been dealing w/ this little annoyance for a while and have been too lazy to do anything about it...
It seems that one or more of the clips that holds the very top of the door panel in place has broken. Basically, everytime the door is shut the panel comes out of place (not noticable), and I have to give the top of it a light push and it will pop back in place.
anyone have a simple solution to hold it in place.. or has anyone even experienced this problem?? Thanks.
This is a pretty common condition. The door panel has stiffening ribs molded into it, but the ribs break allowing the panel to deform just enough to keep it from staying hooked onto the top ledge. People have riveted a peice of aluminum angle to the top of the door, effectively raising the ledge, which gives the panel something more to grab. I used black silicone RTV to hold it in place.
I was thinkin of going w/ the 1st idea(before i knew about the tech tip), using a sticky substance like silicone, but was never sure how promising that would work.
tobijohn - thanks for the link to the tech tip, can't beat $4 for such an easy fix.
I love my vette, and even though only little inconveniences like these happen, these cars are great! :auto:
Just FYI: When i replaced the door molding,,, and added the fix (tech tip) it definately made the door solid... the new molding has cuts for the top door trim to fin in and when you add the angle pieces to extend the lip and pull the door into the molding... its tight and solid..
Also if the panel was ever removed, sometimes it's not replaced properly, that was the case on one of my cars. Also people have a tendency to close the door by grabbing the top of the door panel. That certainly doesn't help.
if i remember correctly, the piece that the panel clips on to is what is broken. from reading the tech tip and such, is the common problem the door panel that breaks, or the ledge on the door that holds the panel breaks?? I haven't checked it out in almost 1/2 a year so I'm not totally positive this is right, but I believe that's what it is...
