Default Beast Motor + TCC lockup

I've got a SR 383 funneling its torque through a TCS 9/11 torque converter (2800 stall) which then goes through a Hartman High Performance 700r4.

I'm hunting down a VSS problem that's preventing the ECU from seeing vehicle speed, but can tell the following:

1. Without speed, there's obviously no lockup
2. As such, the TCC gets MASSIVELY inefficient above 4500 rpm
3. I'm seeing where folks are putting in a switch on the ALDL to control lockup, and that in a stocker situation, you have to worry about WHEN you lock up or the engine will bog.

Assuming I've got a TON more torque than a stocker, and a MUCH stronger TCC/Tranny combination, do any of you larger displacement fellas have a recommendation on speed/rpm to lockup? Do you have anything better/smarter than a toggle switch to do so?

Without a speed indication it would be impossible to automate the lockup.

I've used the switch across the ALDL pins on the IROC along with a mini-LED in series with a 2.2k Ohm 1/4 Watt resistor as a reminder. I mounted the switch & LED right next to the ALDL cover so it was easy to access and to see.

I'm not sure what would be a good lockup speed but you will figure that out once you have the setup installed. Soon as the engine starts to lug unlock it.

Presumably you'd then set the lockup speed in the ECU? (I think stock is fourth gear above 45 mph) Will it lock up in third? (IIRC, when I had the tranny apart, there's a solenoid that won't allow lockup until the piston for thrid gear pushes against it...)

I've heard of a device that sets lockup based on vehicle speed using a ****, but I can't figure how to get Google to barf up results for it. ;)

I'm also wondering if there'd be anything gained on having two settings, say 45mph for around town driving and 30mph for 'Packin the mail' mode.

Your tranny may be a little different from the stock 700R/4. Though I don't have the switch on the '88 Vette, the A4 in the '86 IROC will lock in any gear above 1st as no fluid can flow there in 1st gear.

Anyway the switch & LED is a rather simple setup so your can try it for now, till you get the VSS thing ironed out.

Some of the guys running carbs with 700R/4 have used the setup you describe to control TCC lockup but I don't recall any names or details for it.

Thanks, I can tell some experimentation is in order.

(And to think I hobbled along all summer in third with no lockup as I didn't want to hurt the tranny. )
