Default Head flow #'s?

Has anyone flown a set of AFR heads? I'd like to get an idea of what these heads really flow, not what AFR claims. Although I believe these heads are close to what AFR claims I'd like to see what they flow on someone else's flow bench. Also if someone has cc'ed the intake port, that would also be beneficial. I'm working on a set of Dart Pro 1's, porting and keeping track of flow improvements as I go along. I started out with a rough as cast 195cc intake port that flowed 243cfm@.500" 28"of H2O and so far I have 214cc's with 261cfm@ .500" just wanna see how they compare to the AFR's. I will stop porting at around 225-230cc port looking for max flow @.600". I'd like a comparison with a similiar int port size AFR, but if someone's got #'s for something smaller that's fine.???

Most of the 190s I have heard about from others having them sent out flowed about 250 CFM, claimed 262CFM. ~12CFM less than advertised.

Jim, 85vet just had his 190s sent to total engineering flow and they got his 190s to flow 290+ CFM!!! I think they were around 202cc when completed, but perhaps he will chime in or Corky and give the exact specs.

This sorta blows my mind, why wouldn't AFR reprogram their cnc to obtain these flow values, if its possible, granted the cc went up a little, but ~10cc hardly overshadows a 40CFM increase that could yield ~80hp more. :skep:

Nevertheless, it seems that they can be made to flow pretty dang well.

Thanks for the info! Yeah! I kick myself now for buying bare Darts instead of getting a pair of bare 190cc AFR's or 210cc. The AFR's seem to flow really well without having to have a huge intake port. 290cfm from202cc port is much better than 300cfm from 220-230cc head. I'm trying to get mine to go 280-290@ .600", but it looks like I'll be at 220-230cc by then, good thing I have 408cubes. Thanks again ski-it-down. Hopefully we'll get more feedback.

I don't know if this will help you, but I found a site that has actual back to back dyno results using the AFR 190s and fully ported Vette Aluminum heads.

There are also some MiniRam back to backs Vs ported Edelbrock manifold and runners and siamesed stock manifold and runners.

Engine was Hot cammed.

If you want to take a look, let me know and I can track down the URL

Juan, here are the numbers on my AFR195s, Comp Street heads (P/N 1094):

Published #s

Lift........Intake....Exhaust
.200......135........110........81%
.300......201........157........78%
.400......249........180........72%
.500......275........195........71%
.600......280........208........75%

Actual flow #s:

Lift.......Intake.....Exhaust
.200.....136.........111.1
.300.....198.2......158.9
.400.....247.8......181.1
.500.....273.9......193.3
.600.....278.2......207.5

As you can see, AFR is darn near dead on with their advertised claims, and that's pretty refreshing in today's world of over hype and exaggeration!

After some handwork:

Lift.......Intake.....Exhaust
.200.....153.4......127.9......83%
.300.....212.4......177.8......84%
.400.....256.6......202.8......79%
.500.....286.1......212.6......74%
.600.....292.........218.4......75%

The handwork mentioned just consisted of a little bit of short turn work and a radiused valve job, so I don't imagine the port size has increased dramatically.......they came as cast already matched to a felpro 1205. The exhaust work was mainly gasket matching and then matching the headers up to the rest of it. Since this is a Superram motor, the biggest concern was increasing the exhaust/intake ratio 'cause we're not going to get anymore out of that restricted intake......certainly nothing like a MR or one of Jebs creations :D

Hope this is what you were looking for

I just found the site and, yes, I found he has posted the air flow numbers for his 190s and the ZZ4 Vette aluminum heads in a comparison.

The AFR heads are substanially down from the numbers posted on the ChevyHiPerformance site, "only" 245 cfm and .500 and .600. Chevy HiPerformance has them flowing 262/261.

BTW, I was amazed at how much torque the MiniRam lost.

Jake

 That's impressive! I shoulda've known, I owned 2 pairs of 220cc AFR heads and although I never had 'em flowed, they performed great. That's an excellent port size/flow ratio. Almost impossible to beat with my Dart's, Ill just try to come close. Great info guys thanks alot! Keep it coming

I have a pair of 220's, they were ordered bare and finished to ~213.

They flow 330 @ .650. This was not checked by a third party, they assembled the long block for me so I never had the heads seperately.

From my understanding, the velocity was close to 500 fps.

Those 220's sound very impressive. I'll post my entire process when it's done. I'm gonna go through the intake ports one more time. Hopefully I'll have around 290cfm @.600". The exhaust is already pretty decent 215cfm@ .500". Thanks for the info guy's it's great!

Juan,

I recently posted flow numbers for my AFR195's and some LPE L98 heads in the engine mods section. Here's the link.
