Is it true that its not very good for our rear differentials to do burns outs wile turning a corner? or doing donuts?
I've done donuts before in parking lots just for the heck of it, but I only did it a few times since I'm worried I'll break the rear differential gears. (I broke them 2 years ago wile turning a corner very gently, the car had the original gears back then)
I'm sure applying high torque while the posi clutches are working hard is putting some stress on it.
In fact I finally fried the clutches in my IROC's posi, after 3-4 seasons at the strip. So, I run streets on the Vette and hold burn-outs to a minimum.
Like anything the clutches in the dif. are wearble parts that over time finally just don't do their job anymore. Donuts etc. create added wear. I don't think you're going to "break" anything doing them, but the life of the packs will wear down sooner.
Here's my take on it, as long as the wheels are spinning there is less chance of breakage, it's when they suddenly get traction that you may run into a problem. On my '95 after doing repeated donuts and burnouts, I managed to crack my hubs/bearings, when the half shafts were pulled for the u joints, the bearing was in two pieces.
