I'm having trouble with the alarm system on a 91 vette I just got. It's becoming way to much of a pain and I want to get rid of it. How can I disable it without messing up the other electronics though? does anyone have any wiring diagrams or anything that could be helpful? thanks
i went to the store the other day in it,.. came out turned the key,.. the dashlights went on, but i got nothing from the starter. no clicking, nothing. i know its not a problem with the starter. i was thinking maybe a bad neutral safety switch, or the alarm. the key goes into the start position, but its like the computer is locking it out. the alarm is pretty much useless anyways, so i was just going to try to take it out so i dont have to deal with this stuff again. what are your thoughts??
It sounds like your VATS (vehicle anti theft system) is acting up. Try a few things before you give up and bypass it. If you have another ignition key, give it a try. Clean your present key and cylinder with some spray contact cleaner. If you decide to bypass it (I don't recommend this), there are kits available to do this or a resistor can be used.
The Neutral Safety switch could be the problem. A service manual is a big help on locating which wire to test.
You will have determine where the voltage stopped. If the VATS is not happy, no ground for the start enable relay. If the VATS is happy, the relay closes and current flows to the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS). If the neutral safety is good, current then flows to the control side of the starter solenoid, pulls in contacts, and big power hits the starter. The question is, where did the current stop. If you have a scanner, the ECM will display VATS status. If you do not have a scanner, a voltmeter down on the NSS will tell us if voltage is trying to get through this switch. There should be voltage on both sides of this switch in Park/Neutral, key held in Start position.
As suggested, the mostl likely culprit is key/lock assembly. I would test before buying parts.
