When trying to start my 89 about once every week over the winter I notice sometimes I have to charge to battery. I heard that to replace the battery you remove a bracket from the fender? Can anyone give me good instructions for replacing the battery?
On mine I had to remove the rocker panel and then detach the battery from the cables and tray. It wasn't that hard. I know on the older cars you had more room but I think you still had to remove the rocker panel.
If you're going to keep this practice of starting once a week, buy yourself a Battery Minder. It will keep your battery fully charged and put less strain on your alternator when you do start it up.
just remove the screws from the wheel well, then ONLY LOOSEN the bottom screw to the panel, remove the top panel screw by the door and swing it out... Don't take the bottom bolt out... FYI, put a piece of tape to line up panel to door when you put it back in place...
My experience is pretty much like Vinnies. I was told to remove the inner fender, mistake. Took me about half an hour to change battery and two hours to put inner fender back on. The tape sounds like an excellent idea.
Tell me more about this battery minder? Is it something you can buy at a auto parts store? Also I have a battery charger with trickle charge capabilities, would this also work?
First-follow Vinnies advice :iagree: Second I just had the battery replaced at sears-lucky I went out there to tell him about the valet switch on the alarm-he was taking the whole vette apart-I told him how to do it-he didn't listen all the way :mad Just as I opened the door to leave-that nasty door sound-chipped paint :mad ,luckily the manager was there and they said they would pay for it :iagree: lastly-this time (cold) of the year a bad cell will likely kill the battery-have it checked and if needed just replace it. ;) or you may end up :flag waiting for a ride.good luck :seeya
What ever keeps it charged will work. I don't drive my LT4 much so I keep a battery charger connected to it and about once a week plug it in and charge the battery. You could very easily just disconnect the negative cable and stop the parasitic drain while the car is sitting. I would always charge the battery with a charger before starting the car, like someone posted, it makes the alternators life easier.
