Front Alternator Bearings
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced front alternator bearing failure every couple of years. I started my 92 LT this morning for the first time in about 10 days and could hear a slight howl. I used a automotive stethascope (sp) to isloate the noise. It appears to be coming from my 120 amp alt. I had the alt. completely gone through in April 2001. It seems like the bearings would last a bit longer than 2.9 yrs. Maybe not? Or is this a reasonable life expectantcy for them?

Depends on the quality of bearings used... I had my 120 rebuild a year or so ago & front bearing started making noise about the time the rear bearing cover popped off, spraying grease spots around & allowing dirt into the bearing. I bought one of those 150 amp upgrades w/ the new rear housing that has cooling fins cast into the rectifier area.
Anyway, when I took the old unit apart, bearings... made in china, new ones that came w/ my kit were good old USA. Time will tell if they are really any better.
