Default Steering Wheel removal (1990)

I have a bit of movement in my steering column and want to remove the wheel to inspect it, is there anything i have to do to ensure the airbag will not go off ?? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

To remove the wheel, you will need to make sure not to damage the airbag.

DO NOT turn the key on while removing the airbag. After removal, place it emblem up on the floor away from you!

If the "column" is loose, taking the wheel off will not make it easier to see. Is is loose around where the tilt pivots?

We need some more info...

I've just checked, and yes, it does have movement from the area that pivots for the tilt function. It only moves in on direction though, about 1/2 inch in the direction of 7-8 o'clock. The tilt function works fine otherwise.
Thanks

Ok. There's a loose bolt in the tilt housing. Not an uncommon problem.

There are 3 reverse torx bolts that hold the tilt to the main column. After some time (and a lot of wheel pulling) these bolts work loose. They are very hard to get to as you will have to disassemble the column down to that point.

Mine is starting to do it too, but I'll wait until it gets bad before I open that can of worms.

Hope that helps!
