Does a 89 store codes for the anti lock brakes and if its not the connections and not the fuses and not the wheel sensors. what next a friend said to try the pendilium in the dash under the radio. Brakes work fine is all I did was drive on the grass and the light came on and been on for a year. thanks for any help
Jack
It was on the skyline drive cruise , when we went to lunch I was parked next to you. I have tryed everything to get that light to go out. Changed fuses and all new wheel sensors at $60 a piece. I went past the first exit to the Rest. and made U turn and as soon as i made that left on the grass across the street from the Rest the light came on.
Do you hear the noise that the ABS unit makes when it does a self-test?? That should happen when you turn the ignition to run, then start the car and begin to move forward from a stop to abou 4MPH.
If you don't hear this noise and the ABS fuse is OK, I would look at the ABS unit itself. There should be a code stored in the CCM if a sensor is bad or the module is not working properly. Carefully check the wiring leading to the wheel sensors; could even be a damaged wire.
I'm not sure if your 89 even has a "pendulum" (lateral accelerometer) as this was part of the 92 and later ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulation) system. The ASR/ABS system used vehicle yaw readings from that sensor to assist in vehicle control by retarding ignition timing, throttle closing and/or front or rear brake application.
The 89 does not store codes, making trouble shooting somewhat problematic.
In my opinion, good troublshooting requires the manual. If you read the entire section on ABS, you will have a good base. If the light sets during the drive check, it's usually a senor, could be the accelerometer. If sensors check out OK, accelerometer OK, then the module is suspect. My 90 was constantly throwing RF sensor codes, followed procedure by replacing sensor, threw code, finally replaced module, (used). Bet you can pick up the parts for this system for under $100. Still, test first.

Re: Anti lock brake question (dlmeyers)
:iagree:
I have read the Helms manual section time and again, from what I have read, troubleshooting is "problematic"
The manual sem to indicate that if it isn't obvious like the sensors or the FUSE (did you check the BRAKE fuse) then likely it is the module and replacement is the only solution.
Atre you getting the ABS test groan when you first start and get up to around 4mph?
I have the manual I will start reading, I have all winter. Are you saying that when I turn the key on the light comes on like usual, but then when the engine starts it should go out. The light comes on as soon as the engine starts I don't have to move the car.I just went out to make sure the light never goes out when the engine is started
OK, I don't have the 89 manual but here is how the 90 works, should be pretty close, less code features.
With key on, engine off, power flows through the ABS power relay heading towards the ABS control module. With a fully functional system, once receiving power, the ABS module turn OFF the ABS light on the DIC. I am not sure if the 89 has a DIC, (Drivers Information Center) or equivalent. Probably a light on the dash somewhere. At any rate, the first test of the module is turning this light out. If all is well, when the vehicle starts movement, it then runs a power on rolling BIT (or BITE) between around 4-11 (miles/kilometers whatever). Something like that. If your ABS advisory light is ON when you start moveing, this test will likely not happen. If you have the light on AND you can hear the pump cycle when moving, let me know. This will be a first but could possiblye happen. (Bulb shorted to ground?) Haven't checked wiring diagram for this fault.
Bummer if the 89 doesn't save any codes. I often had the problem where RT sensor would save a code. It was always someone tall in passenger seat streatching out & stepping on the wire connector at the top of the foot well. Heck of a time getting it to reconnect properly. Ended up using pics to tighten the connector prongs & dialetic (sp?) grease to make a good connection.
