I have Royal Purple in my engine and diff, but checked with the folks at ZF and they very specifically said NOT to use Royal Purple in the trans. This is a German design unit and requires a GL-3 rated gear oil - per ZF there are only two approved that will not potentially damage the syncros - one is the stock GM part number and the other is Castrol Formula RS Synthetic. The latter is nearly impossible to find in the U.S., but fortunately it is the same oil that BMW requires for some of their high-performance engines and can be purchased from the BMW dealer - my receipt shows part number 07-51-0-009-420 oil 10W60 full synthetic.

To refine that statement: BMW imports the Castrol TWS 10-60, exclusively, for the M3 and M5.
The only source is a BMW dealer, or any other vendor that supports BMW's... or who is willing to import the stuff. What I do not know is whether BMW has exclusive rights to that oil in this country.
