Custom headers or no?
I have an interesting install to do. The pipes(sidepipes) I have have the entry pipe around where the bellhousing is on the side of the car. I want to do something with the headers while I have the top of the motor still off. I just have stock manifolds right now and I'm building up a 6400rpm 383 w/ported heads right now so I figure some headers could really help.
Should I just get shorties or can I take the long tubes(like the ones that are sold on exotic muscle) and put a 90o bends in the tubes before the collector at the bellhousing? Or would this just negate the gains of installing long tubes. I'm keeping the sidepipes and they can't move back unfortunately.

Let me word this another way. What is it about the long-tubes that makes them better than short tubes. Is it just the equal length runners(that I can do) or is it just the smoother bends(I'm going to have them no matter which I go with)? Or is it a combo of both? They are going to end up with either a 90o bend or 2 45o bends in them for the sidepipes so the smooth pipes would be pointless.

What about Hedman headers. I have read many posts about fittment but I'm going to be cutting them apart and re-welding them when I get them, are they alright other than fittment. I mean for $120 I don't expect much.

Go to header design.com. He designed a set for my race car. Not alot of money. and then you will end up with the right diameter,length and collector size.
