Look in some of the Corvette catalogs, they sell a long rod looking instrument that has a short L shape at the end that you put under the hood from the opened door and push on the latch to open it. You can go down to Home Depo and buy a piece of small round straight steel stock and form the end to make your own tool. Look at a friends car to see where to instert the tool.

Thanks. The '84 is g/f's car. I have my '90 ZR1 to use has a "model". Probably will order the tool but will attempt to make one while waiting for delivery.

It may be just an adjustment, or on a car as old as the '84, the cable may be stretched. I knew the cable needed replacing, when mine refused to open this past summer. I simply grabbed the cable with a pair of pliers and gave the offending strand a tug. I removed the latch pin from that side of the hood, and drove it on a single latch for the week it took for the new cable to come in. Good luck, and...

on my 85 the cable on the inside of the car where the handle. there are two cables one for the left and one for the right. some times one of mine pop out of the clip. you might get lucky and check one of them. also if you have you car on ramps or jacks the flex of the car might not let the hood open. I always pop mine open if i do any of that. good luck

I was doing some work on my 88 and accidentally knocked the cable out of its retainer on the passenger side without noticing. I only realized my mistake when I went to open the hood and the passenger side failed to open.
I simply removed the wheel well by taking out a few screws, then reached up with my hand and pulled the cable. It opened fine.. total cost was nothing and it only took a few minutes to remove the screws then reinstall it.

Thanks, gents. Good info. As this is the girlfriends '84 'Vette, got to keep that "can fix anything" attitude. Probably will delve into it this weekend. As of now, she is relishing in the "I don't have to check the oil every other tank of gas"!!! She is a motorhead at heart but is often caught in the latest designer wear which some how just doesn't look good (her opinion) with a Mobil 1 blot on her sleeve or manicure.
