I have the top end of my engine apart and was thinking of having the injectors cleaned and tested. I sent a note to Rich Jensen of cruizing performance and got the following reply:
If your vehicle has the injectors it originally came from the factory with, they will be the original gray/silver Multecs. Those particular injectors have the highest failure rate of any injector ever installed in the TPI engines. Because of this failure rate, I won't even attempt to clean them. You will be better off putting the money towards purchasing a set of replacements.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that's just the way it is with those injectors. It's not a matter of if they will fail but simply a matter of when.
Thanks for inquiring about my services anyway.

Okay, so what is a good replacement injector for a stock engine?
SkipI: Your story sounds a lot like my situation about 6 months ago. My 89 had two or three shorted injectors and was running like crap. I priced new GM injectors at $140 each. Rich at Cruzin recommended I buy a used set from the 87 or 88 vetts and have them serviced. I found a used set from a 88 model for $80 and had them checked by Rich. The total for both of these was less than $100. I recommend you ask Rich for advice as he is "straight shooter"! BTW, his first email to me had almost the same wording as found on your note. It appears many people with the 89 -91 model years are having "Multec disease"!
Try Bruce at fiveomotorsports.com I went with the 21# F*rd/Bosch. He puts the injectors on e-bay and the buy it now price for mine was $199.00. He is a straight shooter and will give you help if you need it.
Good Luck
Thats the exact same thing Rich told me 2 years ago, so hes not making this stuff up. He knows injectors, is an honest guy and is trying to save you money.
He sells Accels and I bought a set from him and they work just fine. Give him a call, he's very helpful and a great guy to deal with.

Re: 1989 Fuel injector replacement (65Z01)
65Z01,
The reason Rich did your injectors and won't do those for SkipI is the difference in injectors used for 88 and 89+ vettes. The 88s can be cleaned and rebuilt reliably, while the 89s can not.
Rich rebuilt my 88s this year with no problem, but refused to rebuild my brother's 89 injectors for the same reason goiven earlier. Rich is an honest guy and would rather lose a sale than see someone pay for a rebuild that won't last. I'd see what he is selling new and order that from him. His prices for new are about as good as anyone else online and he is good to do business with.
