Have you seen the new Mustang and Vette on Car and Driver?
Looks like the 1992-1996 Vettes can still beat or stay with the 2005 Mustang isnt that cool. The 1992 Vette had 300hp in 1992. The Mustang Gt finally gets 300 hp. 13 years later!!! Now thats cool, took them awhile to catch up to a 92 vette. Vettes rule....
Don't belittle yourself or your Corvette by comparing it to the mustang :D
Totally different cars in totally different classes.
We owned a 2000GT and I'll tell you for the 20K it cost the car was a scream. Was it as fast or as much fun to drive as my 89, hell no. But then the vette did cost 37K - fifteen years ago.
Don't forget that the new GT only has 315 ft/lbs torque. Yes, we all know that a C4 will toast a new GT in handling for sure and probably at the drags. A GT could hold 4 people though, its in a different class as the vette. I tried to compare my 85 vette to the new C6. So far I like the car but not too impressed because it is built on the same chassis as the C5. I figure that a new C6 Z51 car will beat my 85 in braking but other than that the C6 should come down to the driver against my 85 for any other advantages (other than comfort and perhaps gas mileage). I'm waiting until the 2006 Z07 comes out. I really have high hopes for them and can't wait until I can ever get one. As far as the C6, I think I would prefer a 2002 Z06 over the new base vette.
It's to soon for me to make up my mind about the C6 but as a life long Chevy guy I have to say the new Mustang looks very cool... for what it is. As an older guy I remember : The Mustang was built to compete with the Camaro and Trans Am. They are now gone. Why? Not enough loyalty I guess. Even tho I am an avowed Vette lover I can still give props to a cool new Mustang. For what it is. :jester
I'm open minded enough to say that the '05 Mustang is cool looking. I won't be buying one though. Don't have that kind of cash. I'd rather restore a '67 fastback if a Ford was going to take up space in my garage.
This is the prime example of the complete inferiority of Ford's engine design staff and management:
A 2005 mustang, with a physically huge, heavy, and complex, and expensive to manufacture (many more parts than a push rod v8) engine, with overhead cams, 3 valves per cylinder, and variable valve timing ... makes less horsepower per liter of engine displacement than does the new corvette with a simple but elegant 2 valve pushrod V8.
That folks, is complete domination by GM's Powertrain division over Ford's sorry engine development staff.
what is this mustang thing you speak of
seriously, if you think that just now a mustang has caught up or is close, you are forgetting about many of the mustangs in the late 80's / early 90's that would come close to straight line acceleration for a fraction of the cost - No matter what, they were not a Corvette and do NOT compete for the same dollars in the buying market.
mustangs were f body competition, not Y body... :steering:
JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH SINCE I OWN BOTH A CORVETTE AND 3 MUSTANGS INCLUDING A 93 R MODEL. MY YELLOW 96 VETTE IS HANDS DOWN THE FASTEST AND BEST HANDLING OF THE BUNCH AND A VERY FUN CAR TO DRIVE. THE CATCH IS TO COMPARE THE PRICE OF THE DIFFERENT VEHICLES. THE MUSTANG HAS FINALLY CAUGHT UP IN hp 10 YEARS LATER BUT IS STILL CHEAPER IF YOU COMPARE THE STICKER PRICE OF A NEW gt AND WHAT THE STICKER PRICE OF A 92 LT1 CAR WAS . I LOVE ALL MY CARS AND IT COMES DOWN TO THE OLD ADAGE OF COMPARING APPLES AND ORANGES. THE CARS ARE VERY DIFFERENT IN EVERY WAY, AND EITHER ONE OF THEM IS 10 TIMES BETTER THAN THOSE ANNOYING RICERS WITH THE LOUD COFFEE CAN MUFFLERS. I WILL NOTE THAT MY 96 VETTE NEEDS A CLUTCH AT 36000 MILES WHILE THE 92 NOTCH I DRIVE EVERY DAY IS STILL STROLLING ALONG AT 180000 WITH THE STOCK PIECE. AND IF SPEED IS YOUR THING IT IS MUCH CHEAPER TO MOD A 87-93 MUSTANG THAN ANY OTHER CAR ON THE ROAD. THEY HAVE BECOME THE MODERN ERA 69 CAMARO. :D
I like mustangs... old and new.. great car for the $$$.. A good friend of mine has a 2001 GT and it looks sweet and rides good too... BTW: it does one thing vettes can't.. 2nd gear chirps with three people in the car.. the modding of the ustang with begin soon.. they are cheap cheap cheap to mod!!

While the C6 is impressive in it's HP rating, HP/Liter is really irrelevant unless you are refering to engines of very similar displacement and configuration. With these two engines, you're quibbling over about 1.5HP/Liter (65.2 vs 66.7), but it is harder to make high HP/Liter numbers with a larger engine so I would agree the LS2 is the better engine. However, my usual commuter (The Vette is my winter beater :D ) makes 158HP/Liter... and it cost me a fraction of what my Vette did. And even cheaper yet, I know of several engines that make in excess of 600 HP/Liter that can be purchased for just over a hundred bucks. You wouldn't want either one of these in your Vette though.
If you really believe HP/Liter means superior engines then I assume you'll be trading in your Vette for a Honda for your next car.
