Here's what happened, Tried to start the vette and it started, smoke came from the starter and it would not disengage. purchased a reman. starter and installed it and guess what? nothing. I turned the key, the dash lights up, fuel pump comes on but no starter. Is there a check I can do to see the start is getting it's requirements? I thought about taking the it back out and having it bench tested. Thanks for you help..
Pulled out the service manual and followed the tables. Here's where I have my problem. Disconnected the clutch safety switch and had 12v on the Grn/white wire, good check. Next it tell you to put a jumper between the ppl and the Grn/white wire. In my haste I did not see the words FUSED JUMPER and when rechecked the Grn/white wire, voltage was not present. Now I'm going to check fuse links A,B,C. Something is getting hot when I hook the clutch switch back up and turn the ignition to start, you smell hot wires. Now my fun really begins. Would appreciate any help...
The wire (purple) going down to the start solenoid on the starter is shorted to ground. This wire goes from the clutch switch to the firewall connector and from the firewall connector to the starter motor. You will need to inspect this wire from the clutch switch to the starter.
Thanks for the information. I'll troubleshoot this wire after work tomorrow. Now I have two problems to solve. First, I have to find the short, then I'll have to fine what happen to the 12v on the Grn/white wire.
You are welcome, glad you found the problem. If there is no 12v on the grn/wh wire, you will have to check out the start enable relay contacts , the start contacts on the ign sw and the fusible link that goes to the starter switch.
The large current from the short may have damage the start relay, ign sw , or blew the fusible link. If the link is blown then you will have no power to the cockpit (lights, radio, dash, etc.).
