Default Transmission VIN Code

Had to replace my transmission in October. I assumed that all 4L60E transmissions were for corvettes. I have since discovered that this is a transmission which is used on other chevrolet cars and that the corvette version has some upgraded components which make it better. How can I tell from the VIN code on my new transmission that it is a corvette tranny? I know I should have had my original tranny rebuilt but it was so destroyed that I decided not to.

Default Re: Transmission VIN Code (94 Red Roadster)

VIN = Vehicle Identification Number. Once it's removed from a vehicle, the VIN is meaningless. Any 4L60E transmission can be configured to fit in or actually be (there IS a difference), a Corvette transmission. A replacement transmission's history is moot. A NEW transmission should conform to the part number it is supplied as. The unique, necessary, feature of the Corvette transmission, is the tailshaft housing that accommodates the "C" beam. A volume, transmission shop, may take a generic, Chevy trans off the shelf, and swap your tailshaft housing onto it before installation. Your only assurance as to what's in there is the word of the source, and your trust in that word. Your only guarentee, is to tear it apart and verify what went into it. Good luck, and...
