they definitely can, and on an 87 there are sure to be a few that have mostly disintegrated by now no matter the mileage

How do you tell if they are bad?
Wander/pull can be caused by a number of things. A tire with a tread separation, a bad wheel bearing, out of alignment, worn steering rack, bad bushings, etc. Start by checking for worn or deteriorated bushings. Try rotating tires. Do the easiest and cheapest first. Good luck.
