3 times in the last 12 months my vette would not start while turning the key in the ignition. after the 2nd encounter i decided it may be a worn key and had it replaced. last night it happened again, only after 30 minutes or so or trying did it finally engage. i'm thinking it may be one of three possibilities, 1) ignition switch, 2) clutch engagement sensor or switch, 3) starter. all three are 10 years old, 100K miles, and stock.
does anyone know where the 2nd item above is located. anyone other advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Re: Ignition Woes - Have you encountered (wheeljo2)
Bit of a contortion but look under the dash and follow the clutch pedal geometry. There should be some electrical connectors with a plunger looking device. Not exactly sure how this can vary among model years but there could be another connection for the cruise control. Should the no start condition occur, a voltmeter across those terminals with the key to the start position should determine if current is proceeding the starter solenoid. With that many miles, could be worn sensor pins in the lock assembly. They are one of the usual suspects. If you have the service manual, a big help.
Re: Ignition Woes - Have you encountered (wheeljo2)
Are you hearing any clicking from the starter solenoid? If so,
I used to get some non-start attempts (solenoid clicking) every couple months, on the 5 try or so it would start. Put in a new starter and has not happened since.
Re: Ignition Woes - Have you encountered (sothpaw2)
first of all, thanks to all for your responses. no clicking in the starter solenoid at all, powers up fine, battery good, fuel pump engages, etc.. i do have a msd 6a box integrated in my ignition system however, the opti spark was updated recently to the 96 version. at this point it is still a mystery but rest assured i will troubleshoot until i find something.
