Okay, I have heard that if you have a "modified" auto tranny, then you can shift it manually. I am wondering what modifications need to be done in order to be able to shift it manually. I am familiar with the shift kits, but how exectly do they enable you to shift the auto box as a manual? The low range gears are there from the factory (1-2-D)... can't you just shift the car manually without making any modifications? Why is it okay to shift manually with a shift kit and not without one?
Thanks for your thoughts...
Sure you can shift a stock 700R/4 manually though there are no indents in the Vette shift gate so you can't "feel" which gear you are in; the same will hold true with a shift kit.
Perhaps the shift kit has a setup where you can select which gear to start out in, now that would be a nice capability. My shift kit was setinstalled as per the std config.
OK James, but why didn't you mention this  http://www.geocities.com/jgkov/ShiftGate.html
After all, it is on your site  :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:
Thanks for your responses. I believe that I have the 4L60, though (not sure what the difference is). Is there any harm in revving up the engine and shifting through the gears manually? Will I overheat or "over-pressurize" (don't even know if that's a term :D ) the tranny?
I cant believe that is an article about modifying a shifter and it completely misses the indention in the shift plate between neutral and reverse.
I did a mod to my shift plate on my C3 for the 700R4 and I did an indention in between second and third and between OD and neutral so I have a progessive step between the lower gears going up. This was because I was close to the shift point in second racing a stang one time, in stupdity and excitement, I slipped the shifter into neutral instead of third. The motor made a high rev sound I never wanted to hear again. (I figured about 9Krpm's). That was when I changed the MSD 6A for a 6AL with a 7200 chip in it.
I still dont know why no company ever made a shifter that fit the Corvette's tunnel/console. A ratchet mechanism should be all that hard to do in that amount of space.
