Ok, I'm a rookie when it comes to auto transmissions. I know it's not a Corvette, but the tranny's the same. I have a '92 GMC with a 700R4. It slips and there's a rattling coming from the front of the transmission. What kind of gauge do I need to check the line pressure in the transmission. Any advice on how to approach troubleshooting and repairing this tranny would be greatly appreciated.
Rattling in the front is usually from loose flex plate to converter bolts (most common), next to that, the torque converter itself could be bad (common as well) or the flex plate is cracked (not too common)

I'd go with a pressure guage.
BBA is probably right about the rattling up front. Either that, or the torque converter is starting to unravel.
Since it is slipping, you can probably save yourself some time and money and just get it replaced. More often than not, when they start slipping, there's no saving them. Good luck, and...
I had a rattle in mine once. I tracked it down to the flex plate occassionaly hitting the starter gear. I thought the flex plate was warped or something. Turned out I had spun bearings in the engine and the runnout was soo bad the crankshaft was actually walking back and forth in the block. I hope that's not your problem. Did you get the truck up nice and solid and take the dust shield off and run it and get under there to listen and try to see where it's coming from? Good luck.
What kind of pressure gauge? I've never seen one specifically for transmissions, so I assume you can use some other kind.
Pressure is pressure! If the face of the guage says something other than transmission pressure, will the reading be incorrect? I don't think so? GOOD luck, and...

True, but there are quite a few gauges out there that will get damaged if a fluid like ATF is exposed to the element. THAT was the question. Found one anyway.
Since you KNOW that, what was the point of the question???
To find out if there was one that was made to deal with the oil that had a hose long enough to go from the transmission to the cab so you could do a driving test, or if I would have to go source the parts.
Now, that's a good question. You didn't ask, that. I don't for a fact know. I have an idea, but since you've said you found one, I assume, all is well.
