Default Window motor mystery...

Looks like my 86 has 85 window motors...did someone swap out doors maybe...or did the 85 wiper motors carry over to Feb 86? I discovered this when I bought "86" motors then tore down my doors...they were not even close. Mine are around 2X the size...

...confused

The switch was made in mid-86, to a newer style electric regulator without a ribbon.

Unfortunately GM was not smart enough to mark most parts as being different so you could find what you needed.

I had my ribbon break a couple months ago, and had the newer regulator installed. They will work for you but they have to drill some holes and line it up right.

Would you recommend changing out / upgrading the entire assembly? I am in process of getting the correct (1985) motors. Am I wasting my money? Should I spend more and get the newer style reg assemblies? What is the difference in performance?

I'd reccommend upgrading if you can afford it.

I replaced the rubber window seal on my drivers side, and I guess it was too snug and the ribbon broke soon after. So I just gutted both doors and installed the newer scissor style regulators.

If you're interested in any or part of my 85 regulators/motors, let me know. They work except for the ribbon, but aren't fast like the newer style ones.

I would recommend upgrading it too, the newer window regulator makes the window come up and down about twice as fast as the original.

...the plot thickens...I WANT fast! Thats why I am changing...I thought that rebuilt motors would be quick...so I guess I need to upgrade then. Can anyone confirm that the newer style is quicker given both styles in reman condition.

Thanks

I installed used regulators off a 92 vette, and they blow my original regulators out of the water. The ones I put in had more miles on them too, than the ones I removed.

It's one of the best upgrades I've done. You'll need to drill two holes in the bottom of the door, but that's it. Give me a hollar if you need any tips.

I also have the instructions for the upgrade, but all you really need is the measurements for drilling. Let me know..

I just IMd you. Looking over my notes from Bloomington Gold this summer the C4 door class I went to said that all C4s had ribbon style window regulators up to late 87. But, ALL convertibles had the newer X style motor. My previous 86's (coupe) windows were dogs compared to my current 87 vert's windows!
