Nasty rapping sound
Nasty rapping sound coming from the passenger side valve train near the firewall. Knocking real bad and backfiring to beat the band. No smoke. Think it might be a bad lifter…any ideas?

Is it missing too? Pull the cover off and see what you can see before running it any more. Rapping noises are not good!

Not only is it missing, it is knocking real bad when you press the throttle down just a little under load. Don't worry, it is not and will not be driven. Will pull the valve cover off and take a look.

If you don't see anything, run it at idle and touch the rockers one at a time. You should be able to feel which one is rapping.

Nasty rapping sound is what I get when I turn the FM dial to 96 down here.

Going away on business for several weeks and decided to that if I can't fix the whole thing all at once, I wasn't going to get in to it part way...rust, dust, etc. Will open it up when I get back...let everyone know what I found then.

do me a favor and check for bad or burned plug wires before you tear into it. in my younger days i had a car with the same symptoms, backfired badly under acceleration. replaced the engine due to a burned plug wire. :banghead:
