I bought my '86 four years ago. 10k miles on it. I drove as a day car for a year to shake it out. Now 25k miles. - I am still chasing a ping noise that occurrs on initial load application after transmission has been put into gear ( forward or reverse), during on and off loads when driving. I have gone through diagnostics in '86 Shop Manual ( pages 4A-4, and 4B-5). I have replaced u-joints and rear - end. When car is on lift while a driver shifts with brakes on, and I hold onto either half shaft the ping sound resonates through my hands. Chevy dealer say that this was a systemic problem in '86, and the cure is to install '88 half shafts or newer. ( Dealer says bearings were OK.) - I have not removed companion flange and turned propshaft 180 degrees as discussed on 4A-4. -- Any help would be appreciated. - ( FYI: CarFAX is clean, but the car had been in an accident. Good job on rebuild, but something may not be quite right. )
I wonder if this is the same symtpoms the 84's were known to have, they had a ring or a ping noise and the fix was to insert a tube inside this tiny hole on the shaft and spray a fill foam inside to stop the noise.
I dont know if this problem was for 84 only or 84-8? cars or what.
Im remember David F. on the forum a while back talking about it.
Maybe thats whats needed?
..I have also heard of the " foam fix". It has also been discussed , possible cracked welds of the end caps on the shaft tubes. Are the shafts a pipe in a pipe construction? Car is on the lift, and I don't see anything obvious. Comments.... :(
