Default Rear Diff questions

Ok, I'm putting my rear diff back togther. GM told me to use RTV sealant on my rear cover. Any body have any suggestions on how much? how big of a bead to use?

Also I want to fill the fluid before I put the cover back on how much fluid goes in there? One tube of posi stuff and then is it 1.5 quarts of rear oil or 1.75? Thanks guys.

Honestly, you're going to be better off waiting to fill the diff until it's in place and assembled, and use a $10 pump from autozone to fill the diff. As far as the gasket sealant, I have been successful on my car using a 1/4" thick bead of RTV black to seal it up. However, after doing the gear change on LuvMy92's car, we found that his gasket surface was beaten up enough that we had to use some Anaerobic sealant from Napa instead of RTV. We tried 3 other things before going to the sealant, but that's all that would seal.

FWIW, on the Porsches, Panoz LMP900, and McLaren F1 I worked on last year, the only thing we ever used for a gearbox or diff gasket sealer was the anaerobic sealant, and we never once had a leak.

I've still got the machined grooves on my surfaces, hopefully that should be enough to use just normal RTV. Thanks for the input.

I used Petex's "The Rights Stuff", works great. I found out about it here on the forum. I ran a bead about 3/8" wide, installed the cover, let it sit overnight, then filled up the case before I installed in back on the Vette. Mobil 1 lube with 1 bottle of limited slip stuff, can't remeber exactly how much fluid it takes.

Eric: Accorning to "Mr Vette" Gordon Killebrew - he recommends(2) two bottles of GM positraction fluid w/Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil...

:iagree:

in addition to this, you can over fill it and once it is in place, take the fill plug out and let the excess drain out.

That's fine, I run 2 bottles in my Impala, any less and I get the dreaded cluncking when backing up and turning. With my Vette a single bottle has the same effect, YMMV.
