Trying to diagnose a fuel injector problem. I know i need to swap them out, but I like aquiring diagnostic tools as well. So I have bought a digital multimeter, a $20 job from walmart. and a fuel pressure tester checker thingy. So i am out there today, and the multimeter has so many little settings that i know I have no clue. So i turn the dial till i actually get some numbers. All the injectors were reading in the 2.60-2.66 or 26-26.6 or .2-.26 depending on where you put the decimal. I was looking for something in the 16 ohm range, but when I put the multimeter in the resistance mode with the little ohm symbol, I get no reading at all. the mode i do get a reading is the DC mA area. I have no clue what all this means.
And as I get over the the last injector. I stop getting any signal, then as I go back, i now can;t get any signal on any of the injectors. I am assuming I may have blown a fuse? Is there a fuse specific to fuel injectors?
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (Ras119)
Well, on further inspection, i had the red wire plugged into the wrong port. But i am still not getting anything that can be higher that 3 ohms. And the rail isnt holding pressure at all. So, looks like the diagnostics are over. Injectors are all hosed beyond repair. :mad
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (Ras119)
You need to put the meter on the OHM scale. You are measuring the resistance of the inj. solenoid. It doesn't matter which inj. pin you put the probe on as long they are both not on the same pin. They should measure within 1.0 ohm(s) of each other. Suspect any inj that is out of that range of being faulty.
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (ittlfly)
Okay, so i before i put the red probe on the injector pin, and just grounded the black one. Is this incorrect? Do i need to put a prob on each injector pin?
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (Ras119)
One probe on each pin. make sure that the injector is disconnected first. Basically what you have in each injector is a coil of wire. As the wire deteriorates the resistance changes.
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (brookman)
A resistance (ohm) check won't tell you which injector is stuck Open. i.e. Rail is not holding any pressure. Keep in mind a bad pressure regulator can do the same.
Do you have a plug that is black or wet w/ gas?
You can send the injectors out an have them rebuilt.
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (ZylaRace)
what you want to look for is a relativity, the probability of all being is bad is slim to none. I had one bad in a 90 and it caused a rich condition beyond belief. All plugs fouled due to the batch firing of the injectors.

Put the black probe on 1 pin of the inj. and the red probe on the other. This test will tell you if the soleniod is ok. You still can have a gumed up inj. etc.
Re: digital multi meter vs. fuel injector round one (ittlfly)
thanks so much for everyones help. It looks like one of the bunch is pulling about 12ish in the ohm range. all the others are +/- .2 around the 16 range. The one that is visibly wet, like a leaky o-ring isnt even the culprit. I'll keep everyone posted.
