Replacing the entire compressor is really simple (Des require evacuating the Freon, then pulling a vaccum and refilling Freon), but changing just the clutch is usually more of a bitch.
Looks pretty straight forward (looking at my 89 shop manual) but requires using a special clutch pulley holding tool (looks like a huge box wrench) and something called a clutch plate removal tool.
My 89 has a nipon compressor, you may not need these tools if you've got something different.
Yes, you do (assuming the same type of compressor was used in your year)... had it done to my '96 under warranty. Idiot that did it let the oil get all over my engine... :mad :mad :mad
hmn, but do I have to dump the freeon to change the clutch? I'm not sure if its just sitting on a shaft sticking out of the compressor or not.
What year is your Vette?
I recently replaced the AC clutch on my '94 and I was able to do it myself without breaking open the refrigerent lines. There is one bolt and two snap rings that hold the clutch parts on there. The snap rings are tricky to get off of there with the lines in place, but it can be done.
