Re: The hood assembly, How do you remove it. (65Z01)
Me and the wife removed the hood on my 87 (I new she loves me). There's several fasteners at each side of the front hinges and also the hood assist gas springs. You'll also have to remove the headlight assemblies as well prior to its removal. I'm not sure if just me and the wife will be able to replace it though, as you say its pretty heavy! Make sure to mark the position of the hinges as well for easier alignment. She was pretty good with the 4+3 gearbox when I replaced the clutch as well come to think of it! I new I married her for some reason!!! (Just hope she dosn't read this)

They are heavy and the proper way to do it is have 2 guys hold the hood while the other runs around and loosens all the bolts. From a remounting point of view its easier to disconnect the hood hinges from the frame...if you disconnect the hood from the hinges, theres a lot more play in readjusting them...
Another tip is when you do put the hood back on (definatelya 3 person job) unscrew one of the latch hood springs at the rear of the hood...that way you can line up each side and not run the risk of the pins getting jammed..beleive me I've been there, done that and you don't want the T-shirt!!!

JT, it is possible...I would disconnect the hood shock so you can prop the hood open a little more...maybe tie it to something like the wall or the ceiling. BTW, we are talking about a C4 hood, right? I see from your signature and your profile you have a C3...just wondering

Oh yeah Quik, but I'm loooking at a 86 that needs an engine overhaul. Would you remove the transmission first I guess. Then the engine straight up, Right?

JT, if you can get under the car and remove the transmission first. it would make life easier for you but even if you don't, the hood does not have to be removed...granted, not having it place just gives you a little more room to do things
