bang-for-the-buck-wise, does it make sense to have your stock LT1 heads ported, aftermarket valves (back cut), 5-angle valve job, etc as opposed to buying the LT4 heads and swapping them on?
I'm contemplating whether or not to get the stock heads and intake ported, plus stick on 1.6 RRs, and the LT4 Hot Cam.... as opposed to buying the complete LT4 head-intake-cam-rockers setup.
Re: Ported LT1 heads vs. LT4 non-Ported heads.... (steelwindmachine)
Ported LT1 heads will outflow stock LT4 heads, and considering you have to buy an intake to match the LT4 heads. The ported LT1 heads would be a better value. I paid $1500 to get my LT1 heads cnc ported, ss valves, bronze guides, springs.

I have used 1.6 rr's for sale if you want them.
And yes, ported LT1's are better than bare LT4's. When you get them ported though, do not ship with studs and guideplates and assume he'll put your old ones back in there. Bring up this subject w/ your porter.

I can't speak for the bang for the buck part. But, I have the ported LT1 heads, bigger valves, 1.6 rockers and Hot Cam on my 383, and it is very sweet. You won't be disappointed if you do it this way.
