Default MAF sensor screen

I read the archives about the pro's & con's of taking the MAF's screen out.

Question: If the screen has no function, and its removal may enhance performance, then why is the screen there in the first place???

As a caution to foreign objects getting into the TB... one note is to make sure that the seal between the air filter and can are good... so nothing slips by... then you can remove the screens....

The screens are there to straighten airflow over the sensor.

It doesnt make much difference on an unmodded motor to remove them, but it can appreciably help a modded one.

I have to disagree on the function of the screens on older maf's. On the newer mafs, the screen is actually made up of flat pieces of metal. From the end it looks like a screen, but from an angle, you can see that they'r like small vanes. Those straighten the airflow, but they're design doesn't restrict airflow much.

As for the older maf's, the screens are just that, screens. They're kind of like the screens on a screen door, but smaller. These are, going by flow bench tests that others have done, pretty restrictive. It's one of the more restrictive parts of the intake. Going by a handful of tests, the flow numbers for a stock older style maf was 529cfm and de-screened was 711cfm. That's a pretty big difference.

Either way, your not going to feel a difference. I didn't even see much of a difference at the track. I was only a hair quicker after taking the screens off while I was at the track. It's not really worth bothering with unless your trying to get every last hundreth at the track because your not going to feel any difference on the street.
