I just took my IAC off my 90 cause it won't idle at inital startup(cold). My haynes manual says it can be adjusted. The pintle is out 1and a quarter inches. The manual say's it should be 1 and 1 eighth. Here's the problem I can't turn it or depress the pintle to change it's setting. Is it shot?
The IAC (Idle Air Control) isn't a sensor. It is a controller, run by the ECU. The 1 1/8th inch in the book isn't an adjustment. It is the position it should be in for instatllation. The pintle should be clean as should be the air passages leading to and from it. Try wiggling the pintle and pushing it against a solid object to get the plunger to retract. After it is reinstalled, drive the warmed up, car at over 35 mph. THAT provides the "adjustment". Good luck, and...
You have to go through the IAC (Idle Air Control) reset routine correctly or else yeah it'll never idle with it unplugged unless you open the TB blades.
If you slightly wiggle it left to right , it is a stepper motor so it will be a little stiff I have had to use some patience if it isnt burnt up it should move.. worse case is take it out of the throttle body, and just turn on the ignition key DO NOT START THE CAR... you should see it go from park to the initial statrt position.. if it is not moving well that settless your problem.. If you were to start the engine it would extend and "shoot" across the bow of the car :bb then you have the fun of putting it back together... :smash:
Depending on the year of your car the IAC adjustment has differnt methods of adjusting once you set it for the pre length adjustment....
Mo my car is a 90 L98 I tried wiggling it from side to side and also pushing on the pintle pretty hard it wont budge should I scrap it? If I replace it with a new one is there a special procedure to follow before I put it in THANKS GUYS EVERYONE IS A GREAT HELP

I'd say yes, and follow the the previous instructions.......
Set it at the afore mentioned 1 1/8" (as measured from the end of the pintal to the gasket surface.) Install in the TB. There is a procedure to put it in sinc with the ECM. Check your Helms, Chilton etc for the procedure for your yr. car. Maybe someone will jump in here with that.
