i have a pretty good vibration about 68-70 mph. it fades about 71 but comes back around 90+. i hope its just a tire out of balance......any thoughts. just noticed it last weekend. '94 LT-1. yeah i now you all get tired of my stupid questions but i really appreciate all info.
yes :iagree:
have your tires balanced on a hunter gsp9700 machine
or one similar http://www.hunter.com/pub/company/findrep.htm
Its supposed to be the best balancer on the market today and from what i've heard so far on this forum.... nothing else will do.

Re: bad shake at 69 mph (wareagl305)
U-joints! After re-balancing the tires three times it became apparent the tires were not at fault. I inspected and shook the heck out of the axles and could never detect any play. After pulling all three shafts, it was discovered that one of the halfshaft bearing cups was rotating in the yoke. (110K miles) And the xmsn output coupling was shaking as well. Final bill: $145 for all new Spicer U-joints. $250 for replacement parts and balance 3 shafts.
yeah its the U-joints. im gonna replace them saturday with the help of a friend and co-worker. he used to work at an off-road shop. he said it shouldnt be much of a problem. i have another friend who is gonna loan us his shop.......and more importantly....his car lift. any special instructions or hints we should know about? already have the HANES repair manual but i was just wondering if anyone has done this recently.
yeah ive already purchased them. we're gonna replace all them on the drive shaft. the ones going to the rear wheels look as good as new. the off road specialist friend said to use the ones without grease. said they would be stronger and last just as long................true?

Re: bad shake at 69 mph (wareagl305)
Here are a coupla things to watch for and to help ya out.
1 If you use really long extensions to get to the little cap screws on the u-joints its a lot easier than busting knuckles against suspension components.
2 Inspect the old joints very carefully. Especially the cups that are pressed into the fixed yokes. One of mine was turning in the yoke bore and required the replacement of the yoke. You could see evidence of this from the bearing cup rubbing against the retaining clip. This is not good!
3 Check the tranny output shaft for play and condition of the spline shaft. Replace if the seal has cut a groove into the sealing surface.
4 And while you got it apart, check the rear wheel bearings for play.
