Just put new Kumho's on all four corners (don't like them, by the way) about 4 months ago. Had all four wheels aligned at the same time, too. Rear tires are now almost bald. Same thing happened to my F1's on the rear - got about 6 months out of them.
The obvious culprit is alignment, but it's been aligned. And it's not from smoking them down at every red light, either. What gives? Do these cars just kill rear tires? :mad
Re: How long do your rear tires last? (HammerDown)
Firehawks: 50,000 miles without rotating.
I had some off brand that I can't remember that only lasted 13,000.
Right now I have Toyo 18" tires on the rear and they are wearing great. I have around 5,000 miles on them so far and don't see any real wearing. Hopefully, I can get 50,000 out of these, especially since now I can rotate the tires.

I get 2-3 years from my BFG Drag Radials. That's 25,000-30,000 miles. I run them 12 months a year. My car hasn't had anything BUT BFG DRs on the rear for 6 years. I only race it more, than once a week, about a half dozen times a year. But I DO race it once a week, every week, in season. That 25,000-30,000 miles, includes 300-400, 1/4 mile passes.

You got 50,000 miles on a set of Corvette tires??!! Are you sure your odometer isn't set to kilometers? :jester
Those things must have been hard as a rock. Were you sliding all over the place in the wet?

Never had a set of rears last very long! Espcially 50K

The Kumho's are good for bargain tires. But they are absolutely terrible at handling and traction. I was tight at the time, and bought the cheapo's, which I'm glad I did since there's somthing wrong in the rear.
I appreciate the stories about how long everyone's tires are lasting, but anybody have suggestions as to why this is happening? It's not from overinflation or burning rubber, so I'm thinking it's alignment again. The first time, when the F1's wore out after 6 months, the alignment shop said the rears were way out of alignment (duck-footed). Can towing a jetski once in a while screw things up? The car has 20K miles on it (it's a 96)
Re: How long do your rear tires last? (fullboogie)
Of course one big factor is how heavy is your right foot. :jester
Another factor is the tread compound as well as tire pressure.
My '88 came to me with brand new GY Eagles (OEM style) 4yrs ago; I've put 35k miles on them and quite a few of those 1/4mile at at time. I swapped fronts & rears about 1 1/2 yrs ago to smooth out the fronts.
It looks like these GYs will last through the comming racing season with some new skins put on next fall.
I rather like the GY Eacle HP Plus but was checking out the comparable Sumimotos at much lower price.

I think there is definitely something up with your alignment, and the handling/grip problem is probably mostly due to that, rather than the tires. I have had no problems with the way mine handle, in fact they are quite impressive in the rain. I've even seen people running these tires at autocrosses (obviously not the hardcore autoxers who like to run slicks) and they have said for the money they're hard to beat.
Also, if your previous alignment with the F1s was such that it gave you racecar handling and grip, but devoured your tires, then when they "fixed" the alignment and put on the Kumhos you would probably feel like the tires made the car handle worse. Since you changed a couple of variables at once, it would be hard to say which one had the greatest effect (probably a little of both).
Have you made sure you don't have a loose suspension component? Shocks aren't leaking, are they? Tires should last longer than what you've gotten out of them, even if you did have your foot in it every second.

From this I take it your toe is out of spec. I don't think towing a jetski would cause this. If the tongue wt is excessive I could see the camber going out (tires would be worn on the inner edges). My bfg ta zr's have about 12k on them and are nearly gone, but there are quite a few runs on them and they don't hook very well so they do spin a bit often. The fronts are near new. Are the tires wearing evenly across the tread and is there any pattern to the wear that is asymetric?
Re: How long do your rear tires last? (fullboogie)
Which Kumho's? Some have a soft sticky compound & do not pretend to be high mileage tires. Some guys I race with use them & win, but they barely go a year.
There is always a tradeoff between high mileage vs. better grip.
If you had a problem with f1's & Kuhmos maybe you need to try a different alignment shop. If a dealer did it I would run to a real alignment shop - one that sponsers race cars if you can find one. They'll give you a decent alignment.
Hmm, I love my Kumho's (712s). I think they have great traction, especially in wet. They aren't going to last any more then 20K, but I never expect Z-rated tires to last that long. I tend to rotate my fronts and rears to even out the wear. Otherwise I could kill the rears in 10K (2/32" tread left) and the fronts would be looking near new.
50K on tires! Unless that was to the cords and you where driving like a grandma I can't see how its possible.
You don't know about tirewear until you get a set of R-compounds :) My Victoracers are already 1/2 done and that with only about 50 AutoX runs on them.
i jsut got the kumho mx's two weeks ago and i am loving them. the grip is awesome. the tire wear looks ok for now especially since i give the car heck around corners whenever possible, nad the noise is a lot better than the dayton daytonas i had before. i picked up around 2 seconds a lap in autox just by switching street tires.
Re: How long do your rear tires last? (fullboogie)
The rear tires on my 89 would get bald on the insides after about six or seven thousand miles. A mechanic told me to change the rear wheel bearings and he aligned my car. That didn't work and I spent $700 on that service. I gave up.
I decided to buy all of my tires used from those used tire lots in the lousy part of town. You can get a good tire for $45 and they mount it free. I did this a few times a year until I sold the car and bought my 1992. My 1992 is immaculate and I will continue to buy my tires used. I never notice a difference with tires anyway.

I got Kumhos and would totally disagree. They replaced a set of GSC's and handle fantastic! They grip like theyre glued to the road and are much quieter than the Goodyears. Theyre not the best in the rain but I try not to drive it in the rain anyway, thats what my company car is for. Id definitely get Kumhos again.

I agree that the Kumwhoes are garbage tires, not as bad as the gatorcraps. But for 114 bux a piece they are a decent bargain. I still think the best tire I have ever run, out of about 8 different types, are the Firehawks, and the next set of tires I get will be them again.
Re: How long do your rear tires last? (fullboogie)
It also depends how you drive.
Example: My daughter gets about 35000, out of a set,But she also goes from my drivway to the stop sign 380' away and gets the car to around 50mph before slamming the brakes.
